Eastwood Group Practice Website and Logo Design
Dr Rowan Brown
Dr Rowan Brown from the Eastwood Practice Group contacted me to design a new website and logo for the group which encompasses 3 surgeries and a Community Endoscopy Centre based in Eastwood and Leigh on Sea.
The Logo
Five logos were produced in total. One for each of the 3 surgeries and the Community Endoscopy Centre and one to signify the groups part of the NHS following the strict NHS branding guidelines.
The graphical part of the logo draws on carbon being the bulding blocks of life (quite relevant to a medical profession!). Carbon has an atomic number of 6 and crytallizes in a hexagonal system, hence the 6-sided elements in the design. There are 3 to represent the three locations of the group (Kent Elms, Rayleigh Road and Belfairs), and the circle element symbolises a target encompassing all three locations.

The font used in the typography was Myriad Pro. Not the most fancy font out there, but the logo needed to be clear and readable by as many people as possible. At the end of the day, it's a doctors practice, not a web start up!
The website
The home page design needed to accommodate a lot of information, but had to be clear and concise. Main calls to action were pinpointed and these are in prominent positions. With a doctors website, you are obviously going to get a large range in user experience (how people use a web browser and which one) so accessibility is an issue where the site has to be as accommodating as possible. The site is built to be seen in all major browsrs and keyboard shortcuts are available for those not able to use a mouse. All images have alternate and title text so the visually impared using screen readers can understand what's in front of them.

As has been seen with the latest swine flu outbreak in 2009, the latest news on medical issues is obviosuly important one for doctors and patients. A news system has been built in which displays summaries on the home page and the full information on sub-pages.
Dr Brown wanted to be able to update the website himself, so I integrated the very flexible Content Management System, modX, into the website build. This enables him to be able to log in from anywhere there is web access, edit and add pages, upload images and files for downloading purposes and update/add any news items.
