Taking time to think

New Adventures in Web Design
Having just returned from the fantastic New Adventures 2012 Web Design Conference hosted by the talented Mr Collison, I’ve been inspired. Inspired to create more, to break more, and most importantly, inspired to do things differently.

I’m slowly finding out who I am as a web designer, what my strengths and weaknesses are, but the thing I;ve found hardest to find out is how I work best. I know I’m a morning person, I always do my best work then and flag come the 3 or 4 o’clock, so tend to start the admin side of running a business then.

Denise Jacobs gave a very strange talk at New Adventures. Truth be told, i was a little perplexed at what she was getting at at the time. But having time and space to mull over her words, it may be the most important talk of the day (to me anyway). She spoke about how our brains work in connection to creativity; how that comes about, when the best times are for that and how to make sparks happen. Her hypothesis is that when we are relaxed the most, away from actively thinking about it, is when it’s most likely to happen. When our brains use both hemisphere’s, and connections are made between them. I can testify to that. I get ideas in the shower, most often just before i fall asleep, or just as I’m waking.

So what I’m going to do is to take myself away from the iMac, out of the sitting position that humans were never designed for in the first place, and get away for at least an hour a day. Get away to some place different where I’m not in the work environment, or even in work mode.

I’m looking forward to what this change in my work day will bring. It’s a hard thing to do, but I want to try and think differently.
